Why people are choosing skills based training

Why people are choosing skills-based training
Australia’s employers are facing critical skills shortages leading to difficulties in recruiting employees with the right skills.  Not only in trades and apprenticeships, but also in business, project and administration roles, where more technical on the job skills are needed, over the traditional academic qualifications.
This is leading people to choose skills-based learning from colleges and technical institutes, such as the BCC Institute, over some more traditional university placements.  Skills-based grads can often find jobs more quickly and command high salaries, as they are able to put their new skills into practice instantly, requiring little or no additional training from employers.  And, if there is a desire to undertake further university qualifications, courses can be easily converted.
The Australian Industry Group’s recent 2018 Workforce Development Needs Survey Report, identified numerous skills-based gaps, including:

  • Skills shortages: 75 per cent of respondents reported skills shortages, a jump from 49 per cent in the previous survey in 2016.
  • Literacy and Numeracy: 99 per cent of employers, up from 96 per cent in 2016, say they are affected “in some way” by low levels of staff literacy and numeracy.
  • Leadership and Management: 62 per cent “believe a lack of leadership and management skills is having a high impact” on their business, up from 56 per cent in 2016.

A responding CEO stated that new approaches to education, training and re-skilling were needed to maximise the benefits of the digital economy.
Colleges and technical institutes are agile, regularly working with local industry to ensure courses are relevant for students and businesses. Courses like the BCC Institute’s Certificate IV in Business, helps to plug the skills gaps, makes students more employable and offers an excellent pathway for students to achieve their goals.
